The Special Steel Division located at
Khopoli manufactures Hot Rolled
products i .e. Wire Rods and Bars.
It consists of 2 main sections :
STEEL
MELTING SHOP :
Steel Melting Shop with a capacity
of 50,000 TPA, capable of producing
Stainless and Alloy Steels for various
Industrial applications through the EAF
AOD LRF route.
Steel making is a three-step process in
which scrap and other alloy materials are charged into an Electric Arc Furnace
(EAF). Subsequently, the liquid metal is transferred to the AOD Converter
for decarburisation and attaining the right chemistry. Final refining is carried
out in the Ladle Refining Furnace (LRF) after which the charge is transferred
to a twin-strand Continuous Casting Machine for making it into billets.
Dust
& harmful impurities from the hot exhaust gases are cooled and filtered
out and clean cool air vented back to the atmosphere. High quality standards
are ensured by tight process control. Quality is monitored closely by intensive
testing, including Spectrometer & Gas Analysers for chemistry and powerful
microscopes for metallography.

ROLLING
MILL :
a.
Bars through the Cooling Bed and the cold Shear/ Abrasive Saw.
b. Rods in coils through the Garret line.
c. Wire rods through the No-Twist MonoBlock.
Subsequently
the hot-rolled bars may be sent for appropriate heat treatment, e.g. Solution
Annealing, Normalising / Annealing, Hardening / Quenching / Tempering and
Pickling. Finally, if required by customers, the bars are straightened on
high-speed straightening machines.

QUALITY
SYSTEMS :
In continuance
of its pursuit of quality, the special steel division has been Accredited
with "TUV CERT" by RWTUV for compliance in accordance with AD- Merkblatt
W O/ TRD 100 manufacturing process.
The
plant has been accredited under the quality system ISO 9001-2000 by IRQS.
The
inspected and dressed blooms are reheated in a Walking Hearth Furnace before
transfer to the fully automatic 3-Hi Roughing Mill, to produce RCS billets.
These RCS billets are then transferred to 16 Stand H-V Continuous Mill. Before
entering the mill, an Induction Heater equalizes the temperature. The Mill
